Who’s going to win the Rugby World Cup? – Part One

The simple answer is that no one can be sure. Though I want to take a look at the 5 teams, which I think, have a good chance of winning. And so my commentary (meaning my opinion) on the top 5 teams most likely to win the Rugby World Cup begins with a look at New Zealand and Australia.

Firstly, New Zealand. They’re always going to be there. It’s a country completely in love with rugby and where other sports are shunned in favour of the 15-man game. They have strength in depth, game breakers, talent in every position, size, physical development, skill, speed – they have it all! They’re a dynamic team and since the end of the 2003 Rugby World Cup, they’ve showed it. They’ve seldom lost a match and their number 1 world ranking goes to prove it. This year’s Tri-Nations tournament was tougher than usual for New Zealand – have they peaked to early? New Zealand are always going to be in with a chance and this world cup is certainly no different.

South Africa are improving and rapidly. They made New Zealand work extremely hard for a win in the Tri-Nations and their form as of late has been very impressive. This South African side mightn’t have the finally polished skills of the All Blacks but their physically means that they’ll hold their own in the exchanges. Also, let’s not forget that they’re ranked fourth in the world and have won the world cup before. Perhaps history will repeat itself? Their Tri-Nations record may not be as good as New Zealand’s and Australia‚Äôs but they’ve got plenty of game breakers in their squad.

Next I’ll take a look at Australia and France.
